United to the vine

Christ chose his apostles and gave them the mission to go out and bear fruit, fruit that would abide. He warned them that they would be persecuted as he was. After his ascension into heaven they went to the upper room to pray. We too have been sent out, into a very damaged world, and we too need to be very united to the vine of Christ if we are to hold on to our faith and share it with others. In this meditation we consider how:

  • We are united to the vine of Christ through our life of prayer and penance
  • We need a daily plan for our spiritual life just as we do for our bodily life
  • Having a plan gives us order and peace
  • Our plan might include such activities as mental prayer, Holy Mass, spiritual reading, the rosary, reading of Scripture, and a  visit to the Blessed Sacrament.

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Stained glass image of Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit, also called the Paraclete, is the third person of the Holy Trinity. One of its more popular symbols is that of a dove.

When we were baptised we received along with sanctifying grace and the infused virtues the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Few people truly understand the important role of the Gifts in the spiritual life. In this meditation we consider:

  • The announcement of the gifts in the prophecy of Isaiah
  • The nature of the gifts and their relationship with the virtues
  • The role of the gifts
  • How we can use each of the Gifts to better advantage in our spiritual life

Meditation “The joy of mortification”

We don’t usually look on self-denial or mortification as bringing us joy, but it does – both here and hereafter. In this meditation we consider:

  • Why a disciple of Jesus Christ should live self-denial
  • How mortification is essential for holiness
  • Eight benefits of mortification
  • How we can find areas for mortification in our spiritual life, in the fulfillment of our duties and in kindness towards others
  • How we can accept in a spirit of penance the crosses life brings
  • How those who live self-denial always find joy

Meditation on a spiritual plan of life

We all have a daily plan for looking after our body, including regular times for eating, sleeping, exercise, entertainment, etc. But we should also have a daily plan to look after our soul. In this meditation we consider the importance of having such a plan and how we might go about making it and living it.
