Loving God in the Heart of Jesus

A depiction of our Lord, showing His most sacred Heart

The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

Our Lord has loved us to the last drop of his blood and water, and he invites us to love him in return. In this meditation we use texts of Scripture, St Margaret Mary Alacoque and St Josemaria Escriva to consider how:

  • St John writes in his Gospel that Jesus has loved us “to the end” and in his first Letter that “God is love”.
  • Our Lord asked St Margaret Mary for the feast of the Sacred Heart, in order to increase love for him throughout the world.
  • St Margaret writes in a letter about the three streams that pour out from the heart of Christ.
  • We can grow in love for God and our neighbour in practical ways.

Knowing how to love

Jesus blessing the children.

St Josemaria Escriva called himself a man who knew how to love. Indeed, his great love for God overflowed into love for his fellow man. We should all be people who know how to love. In this meditation we pray about how:

  • We are all called to love God because he loved us first
  • Only if we truly love God will we be able to love our fellow man
  • We can grow in love for God in the same way that St Josemaria did: by spending time with him in prayer in its various forms, in Mass and Holy Communion, reading of Scripture, ┬áspiritual reading, etc.
  • We love God with the same heart with which we love others
  • Our love for others should include our effort to help them draw closer to God

Meditation on the souls in Purgatory

The souls in Purgatory are sometimes called “the forgotten souls”. In this meditation we pray about how we can help them and how they help us. We will consider:

  • The Church’s teaching on Purgatory
  • Why there is a Purgatory
  • How Purgatory is a manifestation of God’s sanctity, justice and mercy
  • The two principal pains of Purgatory
  • The happiness of the souls in Purgatory
  • Apparitions on earth of souls in Purgatory
  • How we can help the holy souls
  • How the holy souls can help us
  • What we can do to avoid or at least shorten our Purgatory
